What to review now
Residence routes are not interchangeable
Portugal has different residence routes for different factual circumstances. Income-based residence, entrepreneurial activity, remote work and residence by investment have separate legal requirements and should not be treated as substitutes for one another.
Current ARI source position
The current Autorização de Residência para Atividade de Investimento framework must be checked against AIMA's live Article 90-A material and ARI Portal. The former statement that the real-estate route was merely narrowed has been removed. It did not accurately describe the post-reform position.
AIMA's current materials identify qualifying non-real-estate categories including specified job creation, research, cultural support, qualifying non-real-estate collective investment and business-capital activity. Each category has its own statutory conditions and evidence requirements. This briefing does not reproduce monetary thresholds or detailed tests while named legal-reviewer approval remains outstanding.
Nationality is a separate assessment
A residence permit does not itself confer Portuguese nationality. Any nationality application must be assessed separately under the current Portuguese Nationality Law and Justiça guidance. The previous generic pathway statement has been withdrawn because eligibility, residence-period rules, evidence and exceptions must be confirmed against the law in force for the applicant's circumstances.
Before relying on a route
Confirm the live AIMA category, admissible evidence, residence obligations and family position. Nationality questions should then be checked separately against the consolidated law and the applicable Justiça guidance.
